Brigham Young University Independent Study is a distance education program that offers almost 600 university, high school, junior high school and personal enrichment courses to people throughout the world. Students may complete either a diploma-less transcript program for high school aged students, or a diploma program for adult students. Courses can be taken through a paper/pencil version or an online version. The student studies the materials, submits lessons, takes a final exam with a proctor or at a testing center, and receives a course grade that can be transferred to the school of their choice.

About Brigham Young University Independent Study
Brigham Young University Independent Study offers two options for high school study. The first is the Brigham Young Independent Study High School Transcript Program, designed to help prepare a student who is 14 years of age or older for college or the job market. The student who travels a great deal, who is homebound due to illness, who must change addresses often, who is home educated, or who has not functioned well in the traditional high school setting will find that the high school programs can be beneficial in meeting his or her educational needs. The High School Transcript Programs do not provide the student with a high school diploma; the student will instead receive an official transcript upon program completion.
Older students may choose to enroll in the Independent Study Adult High School Diploma Program, designed for the student nineteen years of age or older who is a permanent U.S. resident or U.S. citizen. This program allows the student to earn his or her high school education and diploma, and requires 24.0 credit hours; most of the required courses are worth 0.5 credit hour.
