Clackamas Web Academy

Clackamas Web Academy is a free public charter school serving students in grades 1-12 in the North Clackamas School District. The online school’s hybrid model combines web-based education with support, classes and activities on-site and in the community.

High school students at the Web Academy are self-directed learners who are prepared to set and meet goals toward successful completion of high school. Parents and/or guardians of high school students should be available to monitor students’ coursework, and to provide structure, guidance and academic support. Personalization of the diploma is paramount, and each student is assigned an adviser who meets with the student, and usually a parent, for an hour every other week to provide academic support and set goals toward meeting the student’s 4-year plan. The adviser and web counselors are available on a daily basis to answer questions and support the student and parent in reaching these goals.

Rosetta Stone software is also used to offer students courses in over 28 foreign languages. Additionally, Clackamas staff and students uses Google Apps for Educators, Moodle, and several other Web 2.0 tools to create an engaging and individualized experience for students.

Using laptop computers checked out to them at no cost, and high-speed internet supplied by families, students can complete their coursework in the time and place convenient to their unique needs. Each student is assigned a teacher/adviser, who offers individual support to the student through daily contact via computer and telephone, and through one-on-one meetings in the home a minimum of twice each month. Through these scheduled meetings with the adviser, both students and parents receive the support they need to ensure a high-quality learning experience. All coursework is graded by licensed teachers who are highly qualified to teach in the particular subject area.

In addition to the on-line component, students are also invited to participate in enrichment classes taught on-site, health & fitness activities through 24-Hour Fitness, field trips and social activities and, at the high school level, “real world” experiences such as volunteering, internships and college courses.
