West Virginia Virtual School

West Virginia Virtual School offers students the opportunity, like their peers nationally, to take courses online that are not offered in their local schools. Additionally, some students take courses that they are unable to enroll in locally due to scheduling conflicts. About West Virginia Virtual School

The West Virginia Virtual School was created by the West Virginia Legislature on July 1, 2000. The mission of the Virtual School is to assure consistent, high quality education for the students of West Virginia through courses delivered via technology, promote efficacy and equity in course offerings, and provide options for implementation across the public school system. The Virtual School initiative helps bridge the barriers of time, distance and inequities for all West Virginia students by providing access to resources.

Guardians play an essential role in the success of student online learning with West Virginia Virtual School, particularly if the student is completing a course individually. The role of guardians can include helping to set up study schedules, monitoring progress and contacting the facilitator or the online teacher with concerns. It is expected that guardians will meet with the Virtual School Contact at their child’s home school to understand the concept of virtual courses, review available courses and actively play a role in their child’s online education.

West Virginia Virtual School Programs

The West Virginia Virtual School partners with several third-party course providers to offer the required breadth and depth of courses required by West Virginia students. These distance learning companies, organizations, K-12 and higher education institutions are experts in the field of course design and instructional delivery. All courses are reviewed for alignment with West Virginia Content Standards and Objectives and the Southern Regional Education Board’s Standards for Quality Online Courses.

West Virginia Virtual School’s providers generally allow and encourage students to proceed at their own pace. Courses are arranged in semester formats and a semester is usually equal to ½ Carnegie Unit. Specific timelines vary with the course and provider.
