Why Online Learning Should Be an Option, Not Requirement

Michael Horn, an expert on alternative educational pedagogy and who works on the Digital Learning Now! Board that leads online learning policy describes how online learning’s potential should not be overshadowed by mandated introductions of technology in the classroom.

Why Online Learning Should Not Be Required

Horn cautions against installing “technology for technology’s sake” in public schools throughout America. Online learning should be an option, not a requirement, as the student may or may not be suited for online learning. Virtual coursework cannot be an “alternative” if it is required and standardized for every child.

Customization is one of its biggest draws – and not possible if online learning is required at a large scale (a.k.a. nationally mandated). Online schools, programs and courses then must be chosen by the districts, not the student. Education, then, moves away from a student-centric system.

Additionally, Horn admits (despite his support of online schooling), “Can we require that students develop these skills [how to succeed in a digital environment and be more self-driven] but leave open the possibility that there may be other ways to acquire these? I’m on the fence.”

Why Supporters of Online Schools Should Reassess Their Arguments

In fact, the argument that online learning teaches students how to succeed in a digital environment is becoming less and less relevant altogether. This is because the systems of online schools are being built to be more intuitive than ever, so it is a snap to learn them for even those unfamiliar with digital technology.

Lastly, as Horn wisely points out, if the “[online] experience is so important or compelling, won’t students naturally flock to online learning?” If online courses were so helpful and truly lived up to their potential, requiring them would be unnecessary. Online courses that are good, that truly help and teach students, will not need federal regulation to boost enrollment.

Innovation Shouldn’t Stop Here

Ultimately, digital learning was supposed to be an alternative for traditional school, not a replacement or supplement. The original goal of using online tools was simple – to enhance the student experience and teach more students. There is, and should be, multiple other ways to teach and learn as well. Online school should be just one more tool to add to the arsenal and innovation cannot stop at the newest technology.
